Reflections/Notes

  • Flash fiction seems to be a good way for me to get stories or scenes out of my head and onto paper without getting distracted from larger projects. It also allows me to get short spurts of writing in with I’m pressed for time. However, it’s a narrow and highly competitive market strongly influenced by having previous publications.
  • I use a completely different voice when I write fantasy or when I write in 3rd person. I prefer my 1st person science fiction style so I need to practice using that style in 3rd person and with fantasy. I’ve found a few short stories that reflect this style that I hope to use for copy work.
  • Don’t get lazy. I’ve found myself pursuing “easy” or “fun” projects that have turned out poorly because I get lazy on originality, construction, and research.
  • I’m not very versed on writing etiquette. I would like to learn more about writing on other cultures and controversial issues. I don’t take offense easily, but I’m realizing that sometimes my writing comes of as offensive as a consequence.
  • I want to learn more about how editors do their work. Not only am I interested in editing, but I think learning about their business will help me to understand what they’re looking for, when, and why.
  • Time to get serious about a novel.

Goals for 2018
